More and more firms are coming to recognize that it might not be in their best interest to open up that expensive New York office or match New York salaries. They are realizing that what works in the New York bubble might not be the vibe in Texas or the Southeast—places that are top of mind for many young lawyers.

“Everything is benchmarked after New York,” Jennifer Johnson, CEO and founder of legal consulting firm Calibrate, said. “Many are still chasing that. But New York will always lead with money, and that isn’t the way the rest of the country operates.”
